In1967on a small island called the Isle of Wight, off the southern shores of England a brand new Mr Gordine came into being! Son of a jazz drummer and grandson to a double bass player it was fair to guess Mr. Gordine (i.e. me) might follow a similar path. I did. Aside from my genetically inherited drum'n'bass DNA, my appetite for melody and songs soon drew me to the piano and guitar. After the usual years of playing in bands in deserted pubs, aged 17, I discovered the recording studio! That was it; I was hooked. From then on I would spend every spare moment experimenting with drum machines, samplers, FX units and keyboards. That same year (1985) I recorded my first album, met singer Helen Sheppard, left the Isle of Wight and moved to London. Armed only with a toy keyboard and a four-track recorder we set about the task of writing and recording songs. In 1986 my friend, Andrew MacKay and I set up The
Gor-Mac Music Organization, a company providing music for films and TV. The money from Gor-Mac paid for studio time and a basic video. In 1987 we signed to Chrysalis Records as Fantasia. For a year or so we worked with various producers including Paul O Duffy and Pete Hammond at PWL (this was 87 remember!). We touched on the top 40, but ultimately the record company wanted another Kylie Minogue. We did not. A year out on the Isle of Wight for more song writing, then Helen went to Africa and I returned to London to work as an in-house engineer/programmer for Ventura studios in Brixton.
